UBAKALA SECONDARY SCHOOL AT 42
In the early 70s Ubakala seemed to be the only clan in Umuahia that did not have a notable secondary school. While Umuopara could boast of Williams Memorial Grammar School and Adanma Girls, Ohuhu with Isingwu Communiity Secondary School, Olokoro with Santa Cruz, Ibeku with Ibeku Grammar School, even old Umuahia has Evangel High School. The only secondary School in Ubakala then was Community Secondary School, owned by late Eze Micheal Akpaka of Nsirimo. Thus most Ubakala young boys then either went to Olokoro, Ibeku Umuopara, Ohuhu or Old Umuahia for their secondary education.
To correct this in balance, the ever proactive and forward looking Ubakala Women Association (UWA) came together with the backing of their husbands to established Ubakala Secondary School, then known as Ubakala Boys Secondary School, Nsukwe in 1979 for the education and enhancement of Ubakala Children to meet up the growing world expectations.
The school has come a long way from when it was established. In line with the vision of the founders, the school since its establishment has been committed to the educational advancement of young Ubakalans through the provision of quality education to them and thus preparing them as leaders of tomorrow.
Against the backdrop therefore, Ubakala Secondary School has over the years produced so many Graduates who are doing exceedling well in various fields of human endeavours. Name it, Alumni of the school can be found as Lawyers, medical Doctor, Engineers, Accountants, Bankers, Pharmacists among others
It is on record that Engineer Ezinna Ogbokiri, Chief John Nwadiogha. Barrister Samuel Nwadiogha, pharmacist Chidi Okorie, Charles Egbuedo, Ndidi Anosike, Kennet Ubah, Sam Ubsh, Chirmaroke Caleb Ufomadu, Christian Ogbuehi, Charles, kalu, Oscar,Nwachkwu, Uchechi Maryjane Nwariaku Chikwem attended the school, thus attesting to the stuff the school is made of.
In recent time, it is being observed that the school is having serious challenge which include neglect from both government and even the original founders.
Three years back, the school Management had written to the Ubakala Improvement Union [F] soliciting for their support and assistance towards restoring the glory of the school. The school Authority listed some of the challenges facing the school as thus; porous fence, leaking roofs, fewer seats for students, encoachment by neighbors, lack of teachers in special subjects like Mathematics, Computer, and Sciences and absence of energy and water.
The Union did the little it could. Engr.Nnamdi Ezeigbo has also been doing his best towards the development of the school. He renovated one of the school class room blocks and erected school signposts and mowing machine for the school.
The old boys association has also been doing their best in this respect.
I want to start by commending the writer for his meticulous observation and recount of history. I would say it is in our nature not to take our things seriously. I can recall that I submitted a paper to the then Ubakala Forum convenned at the instance of Eze Raphael Mbagwu the UBA 111 of Ubakala,wh when Pharmacist Chidebere Okorie was exiting from office.Ubakala Secondary School was one of the salient issues I raised in that paper. The Uba 111 commended the write-up and announced that the forum will reconven in a fortnight to discuss the issues raised, that was how it died.Though the then PG was not given a time to look into that paper with his Exco.Am suggesting that a Governing Board be formed for the School so that they can aticula the problems raised by the Principal, and recommend solutions to the UIU(F) for implementation. We cannot close our eyes to watch that efforts,es especial by our women to die,j jus like we have apparently lost the then popular Ubakala Central School because of the joy that a Local Government Headquar was allocated to us. thanks.Elder Rex Uwakwe
ReplyDeleteExcept, the writer is narrating the history from the change of schools nomenclature and mixture of gender point in time.
ReplyDeleteBecause, I joined by interstate transfer, the pioneering students set of 1978/79 there in September 1979, the very first School Principal then was Mr. O. Omekara ( 1978- till we left in July 1983). Pastor Nnamdi Erugo ( Sarpirokor), Innocent Udo Asibe, Rev. Okechukwu Gbaruko and many others can confirm this.
The truth is not far from what you have just said. Remember also that the school is known as boys secondary school Ubakala. we are the second set after Pst. Nnamdi Erugo and co. our 1984 set came third in the overall results in the then Imo state. The record is still there.
