CELEBRATION OF ENYI's 11 CORONATION: WHO ARE THESE LAGURU PEOPLE?
The Laguru people are those whose root can be traced to the Laguru Community in Ubakala, Umuahia South LGA . Like other Ubakala communities, they are an igbo speaking ethnic group whose early history is adversely affected by lack of written records
They claimed to have originated from a man called Aguru, who was a descendant of the progenitor of Ubakala
The community is bounded by Mgbarakuma, Umuosu, Avodim, Umuogo and Ngwa communities and has an estimated population of 48,768 people which include local residents in it's 10 villages and Diasporas
The community is made of three Zones. The Zones and the villages there in are as follows:
Umuorighe Umuorie, Umuoji, Umuemere and Umuda,
Azuemume Amangwo, Umudara and Oyimo.
Amaato. Umuozuobu, Umuoshi and Umukarakara.
The earliest Natives are predominantly farmers. They produced yams of various kinds, cocoyam, cassava, maize melon and vegetables. They also engage in hunting and gathering.
The community is the birth place of the late business mongul and Philantropist of great repute, late Sir Oji Nwaeze, who died in an ADC plane crash at Abuja on 29th October, 2006
Also from Laguru is the former President General Ubakala improvement Union (F) Sir Ebere Nwaeze, the former TC Chairman Umuahia South LG, Engr Neighbour Onwukaike, the President of Umuahia youth league, Mr Iroabuchi Ifeanyi Adolphus, a former Councillor representing Ubakala ward 'A' Mr Ogbonna Omerenma, a reknowned School Principal, late Mr. Abaraonye, Late Asst police Commissioner Irozuru,
What came to be known as Laguru Autonomos Community did not begin its existence as an autonomous communoty in the sense of it being headed by a traditional ruler as it is know today. Laguru began as a village community under Uba of Ubakala and later Ocha of Alaocha Ubakala Autonomous Community. it was latter carved out with Umuosu as Laguru na Umuosu Autonomou Community with HRH Eze Godwin Onuoha from Umuoji as the traditional ruler.
Laguru became a full fledged autonomous community in 2007, retaining HRH Eze Godwin Onuoha as her traditional ruler.
The current traditional ruler, HRH Eze C. A Ucheaga is from Umuozuobu in Amaato Zone, having succeeded HRH Eze Godwin Onuoha in succession battle that lasted for ten years..
