MEET SIR JEREMIAH CHUKWUMA NWABUGWU. THE FIRST INDIGENOUS PRINCIPAL OF UBAKALA SECONDARY SCHOOL



Sir  Jeremiah Chukwuma Nwabugwu, a teacher of high repute was born on 16th September, 1937 to the family of late Samson Nwabugwu Amadiegwu and late Nneoma Grace Akwa Nwabugwu (Nee Ekwueme)

He had his primary school education at Ubakala Central School, Apumiri. He later  proceded to Methodist Teachers' Training College Otukpo, where he obtained the Grade 111 Teachers Certificate in 1959. He equally attended Sudan United Teachers'  College, Gindiri Plateau State, for his Higher Elementary Teachers Certificate in 1962.

He gained admission into the prestigious University of Ibadan in 1965, but due to the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War in 1967, he suspended his studies at Ibadan and relocated back to Umuahia, when the Igbos living in other parts of the country were asked to return home.

At the end of the civil war in 1970, he went back to Ibadan, and completed his course of study and was awarded the B.Ed Hons in English Language, Literature, History and Education.


Sir Nwabugwu served as a teacher and rose from the lowest rank of pupil teacher to the rank of secondary school principal until 1990, the year of  his retirement.

He joined partisan politics a year later and contested for the House of Assembly election to represent the then Ohuhu/Umuopara/Ubakala State constituency  under the platform of the Social Democratic Party. (SDP) in December,1991. Although he lost to  Dr I.S Nwokorie of the National Republican Convention,  but due to his effort in ensuring that Chief Chibuike Ukanwoko  was elected Chairman of the then Umuahia Local Government, he was appointed  Education Secretary Umuahia Local Government in 1991 by Chief Ukanwoko
 
Other positions he had held included

* Chairman,  Local Government                  Education Authority. Umuahia                  South LGA

 * First indigenous Principal Ubakala .       Secondary School, Nsukw

* Chairman, Governing Board of                Ubakala Secondary School                        Nsukwe

* Education Secretary,  Anglican                 Diocese of Umuahia


He is not only  a successful teacher/administrator and politician, he is also a community leader. In his service to Ubakala Community, he served as the following:

* Secretary of Oturkpo Branch of                U.I.U 1963-1965 . 

* Assistant Secretary General                      U.I.U(F) 1963-1966 .   

* Secretary of the coronation                      committe of the 2nd  Uba of                   Ubakala, 1976

* One of those that championed the   creation of Ubakala Secondary School,   Nsukwe 

In recognision of his meritorious service, examplary leadership and developmental initiative towards his immediate community for advancement of education in Ubakala, he was awarded the Life Time Achievement Award by Ubakalascope News in 2017

Before his recognision by Ubakalascope News, he had been noticed by numerious bodies, who honored him with Awards.  He had equally received Chieftaincy tittles from his community and Alaocha Ubakala Autonomous Community.

He is a devoted Christian with the fear of God. He is an Anglican faithful and a Knight.

He is happily married and blessed with children, who are grown up and are all successful professionals.
